In Pointed at the Dawn, Kyla Covic presents a new body of work that draws viewers into gentle, light-filled landscapes. Many of Covic’s paintings capture the final moments of the ‘golden hour’, marking both the beginning and end of a day, and while not site specific, there is a sense and atmosphere attached to each work, of time and place.
The painted light is ephemeral and fleeting, holding the viewer within a transitory moment as the first and last hours of the day drift along the New Zealand coastline. We are invited to move around the edges of the work, to follow the landforms until we are gently carried to an illuminated focal point, where the diffused colour gives Covic’s paintings a sense of quiet movement and timelessness. The works linger and hold us in the space between ending and renewal. There is an invitation to look past and through the light, to discover something new.
