Ruth Phipps

VIEW WORKS

Ruth Phipps’ work explores perception, memory, and the quiet presence of the everyday lived environment. Working primarily in oil on panel, she focuses on fragmentary architectural interiors and transitional spaces, drawing attention to details that are often overlooked. Her paintings arise from a desire to pay close, poetic attention to the mundane aspects of daily life that become almost invisible through familiarity. Through subtle tonal shifts and closely cropped compositions, the works invite slow, reflective looking.
Grounded in an attentiveness to light, shadow, and surface, her practice approaches painting not as a window onto a unified scene, but as a threshold — a space where seeing becomes tactile, relational, and sensory. Influenced by phenomenological ideas of perception and the infra-ordinary, fragmentation functions as both method and concept, disrupting conventional composition and encouraging viewers to engage with ambiguity, stillness, and sensory experience. Smooth panel surfaces, restrained palettes, and an intimate scale create works that hold perception in suspension, resisting fixed narrative in favour of quiet encounter.
Her paintings develop through careful adjustment and refinement, responding to subtle tonal and material shifts. Architectural details — door frames, corners, passages of shadow — become sites of contemplation where the familiar is re-seen and everyday space takes on a heightened presence. In this way, she transforms ordinary interiors into contemplative fields of perception.
Ruth holds a Master of Fine Arts with First Class Honours from Whitecliffe College and a Bachelor of Arts in History and Art History from University of Auckland. Her work is held in the public collections of The Arts House Trust, Auckland and the Imago Mundi – Benetton Collection, Italy.
