Ruth Phipps
Ruth is currently enrolled in the Master of Fine Arts programme at Whitecliffe School of Fine Arts. Her finely observed oil paintings draw on the nature of fabric that is evocative and intensely personal in its ability to evoke living presence. Her works explore points of connection between the past and the present through objects that are imbued with personal meaning yet also hold a collective familiarity.
"I began looking at fabric as an expression of the most basic elements of what it means to be human, as a symbol of life and universal humanity. Thinking about the way fabrics conceal and reveal became an emotional journey of remembering, and I became increasingly fascinated by the idea of what was forgotten or lost, and how these fabrics might help us connect with the past.”
