I'm captivated by the history of people, the layers of life over time.
It's the thought of all those who have walked over and lived on that land. Who has walked over this land? Who has lived here? How does the land hold memories and can they be embodied in a work that features few human forms? I rarely paint places I haven't seen and been to myself. My work starts from the real and I break it down into its simpler elements, using their power to remember the feeling of that place.
I paint in oil and watercolour. More recently, I've been exploring collage using my watercolour paintings, making fresh work and fresh views of landscape. Recycling if you like. I chose collage, using older paintings, in the 100 Day Project, and have continued with this technique, discovering that a work that didn’t quite make the cut can become something new.
